Why Use Doggy Diapers?

There are three main reasons which we’ve found people use dog diapers for:

  1. Urinary Incontinence-Whether it’s bladder problems or just old age, some dogs can’t seem to hold it in. That means you’re looking at a serious problem for your floors and furniture if you don’t take proactive measures.
  2. Training Puppies-Dog diapers can make a useful training tool for your pup, but remember that you’ll still need to take him outside. Still, it can be useful for those with expensive furniture and hardwood flooring as long as you’re still proactive about training them where the proper place to go is.
  3. Females in Heat-Using a dog diaper for a female in heat is fairly common. It can help to keep everything cleaner and will also prevent the incessant licking that’s so common in these situations.

What am I Looking For in a Dog Diaper?

The biggest difference is whether to go with disposable or rewashable.

The differences can be broken down pretty easily:

Disposable

Rewashable

Made to be thrown away

Made to be rewashed

Cheaper in the short term

More expensive initially

Less “green”

More environmentally friendly

Best for short term use

Best for long term use

Once you’ve decided on that, you’ll also need to figure out whether or not you want a full diaper or a wrap.

Full diapers are primarily for female dogs. They can also be used in cases of fecal incontinence for male dogs who have trouble holding in their poop.

Wraps are for male dogs. They wrap around the waist of the dog and over their genitals in order to keep them from peeing everywhere. They really have no use on female dogs, but some people use them as an easy way to fashion full diapers on them if they have both genders of dog in their home.

You’ll also need to take into account the following:

  • Sizing: Finding the appropriate size for your dog is relatively easy. Just make sure that you measure around their back waist and then compare to the charts that each brand has. You may also need to find something a little bit longer.
  • Layers: The layers are the fundamental portion. There are layers of absorbency, of course, but there are also waterproof exteriors to consider for leak control. A few of the ones which we took a look at also had an odor control layer, which is a good idea for dogs with poop problems.
  • Bands: Both full diapers and wraps have bands. They’re rather important since they’re the fastening mechanism and you don’t want your dog’s diaper falling off all the time. Look for strong velcro on washables.
  • Easily Washable: Since they will, by their very nature, end up covered in waste, you want any washable diapers to be able to get clean with a minimum of effort.
  • Cost: Cost is going to be a big factor for most people, especially for disposables since they’ll be frequent purchases while washable diapers cost more upfront but will last for years even with nearly daily use.

As long as you keep the above in mind then you’ll be in good paws.

Best Female Dog Diapers

The diapers designed for female dogs lack a belly band and are instead made to wrap around the backside of the dog. Think of them as basically a baby diaper with a hole for the tail of the dog.

Overall Best Female Dog Diapers

Pet Parents Washable Dog Diapers

Pet Parents makes these washable dog diapers which have an adjustable fit and come in a ton of different sizes. They also come in packs of three, which is great since it gives you time to get them clean in between.

The diapers are designed with an absorbent pad sewn into the liner and a waterproof outer layer. The waterproof layer keeps leaks to a minimum even if you happen to take a bit longer than normal to change their diaper.

Our favorite part is that they lack the “crinkle” effect which comes with many diapers and can drive your dog absolutely crazy. This also makes them great for anxious dogs as well as much more comfortable for your pup.

4.8/5
Our Opinion:

The Pet Parents Washable Dog Diapers are some of the best on the market. Accept no imitations when you’re looking for a washable diaper.

Best Disposable Female Dog Diapers

Paw Inspired Ultra Protection Disposable Dog Diapers

On the other hand, if you’re looking for a disposable option for short-term use, then you may want to take a look at these disposable dog diapers from Paw Inspired. They have an adjustable fit, come in three sizes, and you’ll quickly find that they’re the best on the market.

This particular model is extremely absorbent and actually features a nice little surprise: they automatically convert your dog’s urine to gel in order to ensure that there aren’t any leaks. Due to their construction you don’t even have to worry about leaks once the gelling is done.

The fasteners are re-adjustable as well, so the three sizes are more than enough for the majority of dogs. They do have that disposable “crinkle” that drives some dogs nuts, so be aware of that before you decide to make the investment.

4.5/5
Our Opinion:

For those looking for disposable diapers for their dog, these ones are hard to beat. Their unique technology and adjustable waistband makes them great for both you and your dog.

Most Stylish Dog Diaper

JoyDaog Small Dog Diapers for Female

If you’re worried about making sure you have a dog which is both stylish and not peeing in the house then you’re going to want to check out these dog diapers from JoyDaog. They come in a variety of colors and there’s even a pseudo-denim pattern available.

It contains two layers of microfiber which work as a fantastic absorption pad.

While the non-denim patterns look extremely similar to our top pick they’re not quite as durable and the outer layer doesn’t have the same leak-proof outer layer as our favorite. They are a bit more breathable however, so it’s not all bad.

They feature an adjustable waistband like all of our favorite reusable brands.

4.5/5
Our Opinion:

If you’re looking for a little bit of extra flair in your dog diapers, then perhaps you’ll want to take a look at these. They don’t perform as well as our favorites but they’re no slouch.

Best Dog Diaper for Odor Control

Paw Legend Reusable Female Dog Diapers

While not quite as great as our favorite, these dog diapers are pretty awesome. They have a great, waterproof outer layer, a super absorbent inner layer, and an odor control layer. The latter is the biggest differentiation.

The different layers are great, but they hurt the durability a little bit simply because there’s more fabric. We definitely wouldn’t call them flimsy, however, they’re still remarkably well put together in the end.

They also come in four different sizes and more color variations than any of our other options for females as well. It’s a nice touch, and there’s even patterned options available.

4.5/5
Our Opinion:

There’s a lot to like here, but the odor control is the standout option. It’s a permanent layer and it can help to keep things a little bit cleaner in the air.

Best Male Dog Diapers

The dog diapers which are specifically designed for male dogs are a little bit different. They end up being more of a wrap to cover your dog’s lower torso in order to catch the urine. The unfortunate part of this is that male dog diapers won’t work for feces.

Best Male Dog Belly Band

JoyDaog Reusable Belly Bands for Dogs

JoyDaog makes these excellent washable belly bands. They make them in six sizes and they come in a variety of sizes as well. They come in packs of five as well, so you’ll definitely have time to wash some in between uses.

They’re constructed with a double layer of microfiber in order to absorb a substantial amount of urine. The wide Velcro® strap which holds them together is remarkably easy to place on your dog as well.

The microfiber pads actually do remarkably well at holding urine for long periods, although it would be nice if the outer layer was waterproof.

Once fitted, they tend to stay on extremely well. That’s good news for those dogs that like to move around quite a bit since belly bands tend to be looser than diapers.

4.9/5
Our Opinion:

If you’re looking for a belly band for your male dog, then you’ll be in luck with this one. Just remember that it’s only for urine and doesn’t have a waterproof outer layer.

Best Disposable Male Dog Wrap

Disposable Dog Male Wraps

Disposable and easy to use, these wraps will catch your dog’s urine with no issues. They’re also quite long lasting, which was our favorite part.

They have a quick drying technology which turns the urine into a gel instantly. This helps to keep things in place, and they seal tightly around your dog’s waist which helps to keep leaks to a minimum if you forget to change them for awhile.

There are even elastic edges to allow your dog as much comfort as possible. Combined with the wetness indicator… well, they really are extremely well designed for a disposable wrap.

4.5/5
Our Opinion:

If you’re looking for the best disposable male dog wraps around then you’ll be in luck with this excellent option. The engineering which went into these, as a disposable, is quite impressive.

Runner Up for Best Male Dog Wrap

Paw Legend Washable Dog Belly Wrap Diapers Male Dog

While not quite as awesome as our favorites, there’s some definite advantages to them. Our favorite difference is that the outer layer is waterproof – this is one of the best ways to ensure that there are no leaks if you take too long to remove the band.

It’s probably also the most comfortable of the wraps that we took a look at, which makes them a great choice for those dogs with short hair who might be irritated by other materials.

There are also plenty of different color and pattern options for those who care about that sort of thing.

Of course, the real winner here is your furniture and floors since these are virtually leakproof. There’s also a size available for virtually any breed of dog out there, although the cost runs a bit high.

4.5/5
Our Opinion:

While perhaps not as great as our favorites, these are definitely a viable option for those who want the extra leak protection.

Best Budget Male Dog Wrap

AmazonBasics Male Dog Wrap

If you’re just looking for something basic, then you’ll probably find these to be the best bang for your buck. You’ll get thirty at a time for a relatively low price and they’re rather useful for your dogs.

Like any good wraps they have a wetness indicator so you’ll know when your dog will need changing. They’re not quite as comfortable as our favorites and they also lack the gelling technology which we really liked in them.

On the other hand, they’re a lot cheaper so if you’re not looking forward to spending a lot of money then this is probably your best option.

They’re definitely not perfect though and if you’re looking at long term use then you may want to invest a little bit more money.

4.5/5
Our Opinion:

For those on a tight budget or who only need occasional light use these are an excellent option. If they’re going to be using diapers for a long time then you may want to consider another option.

Dog Diaper FAQ

We’re sure you’ve got questions.

Well, we’ve got answers, welcome to our dog diaper FAQ.

Can I use human diapers on my dog?

Yes. Full dog diapers, like those we recommended for female, are almost the exact same thing. However, you’ll have to find a way to cut a hole for the tail. We recommend using a sharp pair of scissors. You’ll also need to secure them in place.

Do dog diapers work for poop?

Full diapers can be used to catch feces, but as a general rule you’ll find that most dogs won’t pass stool when they’re wearing a diaper so it’s not as much of a concern. They work very well for dogs with fecal incontinence however.

Do doggie diapers help with potty training?

You can use your diapers to train your puppy. Make sure to size them appropriately. However, you still need to make sure to take your dog out regularly and remove the diapers. Instead of being used as a crutch, they’re really more of a protection for your home.

How long can a dog go without pooping?

Since diapers can prevent a dog from pooping many people find themselves a bit confused about this. Most dogs will need to eliminate at least once a day. You should never force your dog to not poop for over a day. In general, if your dog isn’t wearing diapers and hasn’t eliminated in 48 hours there is most likely a constipation problem.

How do you get a dog’s diaper to stay on?

Dogs have a tendency to pull their diapers off, which can be quite a pain. You can pair a belly band with a full diaper for a good fit, put the dog in an onesie, or even use doggie suspenders. It really depends on what your own dog will tolerate.

How do you put a diaper on a dog?

Wraps are relatively self-explanatory. Full diapers can be placed relatively easily, just put the diaper over the tail of your dog and then complete the wrap. With washable diapers firmly attach the Velcro®, with disposables you’ll have an adhesive strip which will need to be completed.

Can I put a diaper on my dog in heat?

Of course! In fact this is one of the most common uses for them since it prevents blood from getting on anything. They’re also used to prevent the licking which can occur.

How long does a female dog bleed?

Your dog’s estrus cycle will last about ten days.

Do spayed female dogs have periods?

No, after spaying female dogs will no longer have cycles of heat.

No More Worries About Pee

With the right diapers for your dog, incontinence can be a thing of the past. Whether it’s to keep a puppy from peeing in the house during training or for an unfortunately disabled dog, they can be an essential part of the routine of keeping your pet from destroying your furniture and floors.

So, what are you waiting for?
